THE Government may be desperate to attract more teachers - but it has no plans to re-employ staff who retired because of ill-health, says Estelle Morris.

Teachers who retire due to illness get enhanced pensions in compensation. Ms Morris said that it would be “inappropriate” to allow them to retain the cash i they returned to the classroom.

In answer to a question from Tory MP Christopher Chope, Ms Morris emphasised the importance of a healthy teaching workforce. Ill-health retirements had fallen by 50 per cent since 1997.
