Dr Onora O’Neill, principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, and chair of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, has become a trustee of the Nuffield Foundation and will take over the chairmanship from Lord Flowers when he retires next year after 16 years as a trustee and 10 years as chairman.
David Drewry, director, science and technology, and deputy chief executive of the Natural Environment Research Council, is to succeed Sir John Hanson as director-general of the British Council. Sir John retires in January 1998 to become warden of Green College, Oxford.
Professor Peter Mittler, formerly dean of the faculty of education and professor of special education at Manchester University, has been awarded the title of distinguished visiting professor 1997-8 in Hong Kong University’s department of education.
Bill Lucas, founder of the Learning through Landscapes charity, will become the first chief executive of the Campaign for Learning, a Royal Society of Arts initiative, on November 3.
