Wigan has made the following appointments: Carol Stone, acting principal youth officer for Manchester, is to be head of services to young people. Catherine Hitchen, acting area special needs officer for Lancashire, is to be head of the special educational needs service.

David Wheeldon, formerly deputy head of King Edward VI Five Ways School (one of seven schools of the King Edward Foundation in Birmingham), has succeeded Bryan Purvis as head of Altrincham Grammar School for Boys.

Lilian Black, formerly director of external development at Leeds Training and Enterprise Council, is now director of business development at Calderdale College, Halifax.

Christopher Brown, head of Norwich School, has been appointed chair of the Choir Schools’ Association for two years. He replaces John Baxter, head of Wells Cathedral School.

Sally Whitaker, formerly external relations and information officer at Birkbeck College, London University, has been appointed communications and marketing director of the National Children’s Bureau.

Ken Warman, formerly manager, social sciences department, Bridgwater College, Somerset, became head of humanities, sciences and languages at Uxbridge College, Middlesex, on August 1.
