Tim O’Shea, professor of information technology and pro-vice-chancellor at the Open University, will become master of Birkbeck College, London University, on January 1. He takes over from Professor Richard Evans, who has been acting master since May 5 following Baroness Tessa Blackstone’s departure to become minister of state for education and employment with responsibility for lifelong learning including higher education.

Angela Anning has been promoted to a chair in early childhood education at Leeds University.
