The Rt Hon Betty Boothroyd, speaker of the House of Commons, will be installed as Chancellor of the Open University on March 18.

Philip Graham, formerly professor of child psychiatry and dean of the Institute of Child Health, has been appointed chair of the National Children’s Bureau.

Jackie Kearns is leaving her post as head of Homewood School, Tenterden, Kent, in January to become director of the International School of Duesseldorf, Germany. She will be replaced by Derek Adam, at present head of Camborne School and Community College in Cornwall.

Dr Elizabeth Sidwell, principal of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Girls School, London SE14, has been appointed principal of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College, a City Technology College, from January 1.

Dr James Banks, regional educational psychologist at Lothian, will become regional educational psychologist at Grampian from January.

Steve Bell, cartoonist of the year, has been awarded an honorary master of literature degree from the University of Teesside.
