Simon Williams, assistant organist at St George’s Church, Hanover Square, London W1, and secretary of the National Organ Teachers’ Encouragement Scheme, will become education and development officer at the Royal College of Organists in January.
South Bank University, London, has awarded honorary doctorates to: Desmond Tutu, archbishop of Cape Town; Baroness Perry of Southwark, president of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge; Chief Emeka Anyaoku, secretary general of the Commonwealth; and Lord Sheppard of Didgemere, chairman of Grand Metropolitan.
Keele University has awarded honorary degrees to the following: Patrick Moore, presenter of BBC television’s The Sky at Night and past president of the British Astronomical Association (doctor of science); Stuart Lyons, chief executive of Royal Doulton (doctor of letters); and Beryl Deane, former secretary to three Keele vice-chancellors (master of the university).
