Dr Geoffrey Coplan will become rector of Westminster University on January 1. He is currently the university’s deputy rector and will replace Professor Terence Burlin who is retiring after 33 years at the institution.

Sir Walter Bodmer, director-general of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, will become principal of Hertford College, Oxford on September 1, 1996. He will succeed Sir Christopher Zeeman, who retires this summer.

Moira Fraser Steele has been appointed director of education and training at the Design Council. She was formerly assistant director. Angela Dumas, consultant director of research, takes up her full-time post as research director while retaining her roles as director of the centre for design management at London Business School, and as research associate at the Judge Institute, Cambridge University.

Curtis Price, King Edward professor and head of music at King’s College London, is to be principal of the Royal Academy of Music.

Sarah Evans, head of Friends’ School, Saffron Walden, will become head of King Edward VI High School for Girls when Ena Evans retires in 1996.

Brian Sanders, the distinguished illustrator and postage stamp designer, has been made an honorary doctor of arts at Plymouth University. He has illustrated many of the Wycliffe detective books and all of the James Herriot Omnibus editions.
