Vincent McDonnell, principal education officer for pupil and student services, Staffordshire, has been appointed chief education officer for Richmond upon Thames. He replaces Mary Evans, Richmond’s acting chief education officer, who is moving to Wandsworth as deputy director of education.

Peter Cope, formerly head of Watling Way Middle School, Galley Hill, Milton Keynes, is now head of Springfield Middle School, Milton Keynes. He succeeds Paul Freedland, who has retired through ill health.

Susan Wright has been appointed principal of Queen Alexandra College, Birmingham. She was formerly vice principal of this specialist college for people with visual impairment.

The National Literacy Trust has appointed Liz Attenborough as project director of the National Year of Reading team. A former director of Penguin Books in charge of all children’s publishing, she is now a publishing consultant and writer.

Peter Tinniswood, master of Magdalen College School, Oxford, will become head of Lancing College from September 1998 upon the retirement of Christopher Saunders.

Howard Barnes, a teacher at Penrhyn Community School, Cornwall, has won the Prince Michael Road Safety Teacher Award sponsored by Wincanton Logistics for courses he designed and runs at the comprehensive school.
