Howard Clarke is retiring as principal of Stockton Sixth Form College, Teesside, a post he has held since 1986. In that time student numbers have almost doubled to 950 and A-level pass rates have increased to 96 per cent. His successor is Martin Clinton, principal of Woking College, Surrey.

Helen Coll has been elected to chair the National Association of Music Educators for this year. She is head of secondary education in the education faculty of the University of Central England and is a former vice-chair and secretary of the association.

Caroline Whalley has been appointed to the newly created post of executive director of learning and ambition at the London Borough of Ealing. The post builds on the previous one of executive director of education and lifelong learning which Dr Whalley filled in an interim capacity for seven months. She was director of schools in Ealing for three years after working in a number of senior education roles in the London Borough of Hillingdon.

The Girls’ Day School Trust has appointed Stephen Callaghan, deputy head of Guildford high school, Surrey, to be head of Sutton high school, Surrey, from next September. He was educated at Hitchin boys’ grammar school in Hertfordshire and University College, Durham, where he read French and German.
