Elaine Simpson has been appointed as managing director for Education Walsall, the organisation which recently began managing the education service in partnership with schools in Walsall. She was previously education director for the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, north of Liverpool. Ms Simpson was assistant director of education in Liverpool, five years before moving to Sefton.

Bob McKee, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, has been appointed to the Board of Resource, the council for museums, archives and libraries, by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

Dr McKee joins British Library chief executive Lynne Brindley, whose appointment to the Board was announced at the same time.

The Governing Body of St Cross College, Oxford, has elected Professor Andrew Shaw Goudie, Fellow of Hertford College and head of department at the school of geography and the environment to the Mastership of the college from October 1 on the retirement of Dr Richard Cooper Repp who has been Master of St Cross since October 1987.
