Gill Smith has been appointed head of a new secondary school to be built at Maidenbower, Crawley, as part of West Sussex County Council’s pound;54 million Private Finance Initiative.

The school will be the first to be built as part of a major boost for secondary education in Crawley and is due to open in September 2004. Ms Smith was educated in Surrey but trained to be a teacher in New Zealand before working in a large multi-racial college in Auckland.

On returning to England she resumed her career and in 1996 was appointed deputy head of the 850-pupil Farnham Heath End secondary school in Surrey.

Charlie McConnell, policy adviser on community learning and development at the Scottish Executive, has been appointed chief executive of the Carnegie UK Trust. He succeeds John Naylor who is retiring.

Mr McConnell has been involved in youth and community work for 30 years and was chief executive of the Scottish Community Education Council. He played a leading role in establishing the UK’s National Training Organsiation for community learning and development, becoming its first chairman in 1999.

The trust was founded in 1913 by Scottish-born philanthropist Andrew Carnegie “for the well-being of the masses of the people in Great Britain and Ireland”.
