PETER Wylie will become the London borough of Croydon’s director of education in September when David Sands retires. Mr Wylie taught for four years before moving into educational management in Middlesbrough. He was director of education at Knowsley, Merseyside, for seven years before taking up his post as performance management director in Islington, north London.

Dean Ashton has been appointed as Cornwall’s deputy director of education, arts and libraries. He taught science in schools before becoming deputy head of Penrice Community College in 1988, then acting head. He became assistant director of Cornwall LEA in April 2002.

Phyllis Dunipace has been appointed as executive director of education of the London borough of Lambeth, where she has been interim director for nine months since Michael Peters’ resignation. She joined the Inner London Education Authority and taught in Bexley and Lambeth before becoming assistant director for community and lifelong learning.
