At Brighton and Hove shadow unitary council, Paul Burnett has been made assistant director for parent and pupil services and Peter Walker assistant director for school effectiveness and lifelong learning. Mr Burnett was formerly head of operations and Mr Walker was principal adviser for secondary education for East Sussex.

David Whitbread, education officer at the Association of County Councils, is to be head of education for the new Local Government Association.

Pat O’Shea, head of Bottisham Village College mixed comprehensive school in Cambridgeshire, will become head of Lord Williams’s School, Thame, Oxfordshire, in April 1997. She is to replace David Kenningham, who is retiring after 12 years in the post.

Celia Budge, head of The Compass School, Haddington, becomes head of The Junior Girls’ School, Surbiton High School, Surrey, on September 1 1997 upon the retirement of Janet Clucas after nine years’ service.

Christina Perry, an A-level student at Danetre Tertiary College, Daventry, Northamptonshire, was recently presented with a Royal Historical Association Young Historian award by Nick Tate, chief executive of the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority. It was awarded for her GCSE project work on a local site, Weedon Depot.
