Wigan has appointed two assistant directors to start in mid-August: Maggie White, operations manager with children’s educational charity Cities in Schools, becomes assistant director of education (pupil-student services) and Deborah Hibberd, who has a similar post at Oldham, becomes assistant director of education (establishment services).

Rodney Buse, formerly personnel director of W H Smith Group, has succeeded Sir Christopher Ball as chair of the National Advisory Council for Careers and Educational Guidance (the Guidance Council). He will spearhead the council’s transition towards independence from the Royal Society of Arts and the Confederation of British Industry in 1997.

Rachel Davies, faculty director for student and learning services at Newham College, East London, becomes vice-principal of Uxbridge College, Middlesex, on September 1.

Lynnette Tully, who gained a City and Guilds Further and Adult Education Teachers Certificate at North East Surrey College of Technology, Epsom, after 20 years out of education, has been presented with the Outstanding Adult Learner Award. She overcame many difficulties, including the onset of multiple sclerosis.
