Professor David Melville, vice-chancellor of Middlesex University, will become chief executive of the Further Education Funding Council in September when Sir William Stubbs leaves to become rector of the London Institute of Education.

At Croydon Council, Geraint Davies has been appointed leader of the council and chair of the education committee and Valerie Shawcross has become deputy leader replacing Jerry Fitzpatrick who stood down because of increased commitments in his new legal career.

Councillor Shawcross was formerly vice chair of education and chair of the committee, a role she will continue as deputy leader.

Dr Peter Sainsbury, principal of Hind Leys Community College, Shepshed, near Leicester, has been appointed head of Hinchingbrooke School, Huntingdon, succeeding Peter Downes who is retiring in December to take up educational consultancy.

Jonathan Brown, vice-president of the National Association of Educational Guidance for Adults, has been appointed the first professor of educational guidance at the Open University.

Ian Partridge CBE has succeeded Emanuel Hurwitz CBE as president of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
