Donald Chroston, retired financial director of Sunderland Health Commission and current chair of Monkwearmouth College governors, is to be chair of the Board of Corporation of the City of Sunderland College, which will be formed from the merger of Monkwearmouth and Wearside colleges.

Malcolm Denton, director of physical education policy for the prison service, will become general secretary of the Central Council of Physical Recreation, on March 1.

Elizabeth Hodder, a commissioner for the Meat and Livestock Commission and a member of the Building Societies Ombudsman Council, has been appointed deputy chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission for three years.

Following the killing of headteacher Philip Lawrence, the University of Ulster is honouring the teaching profession in this summer’s degree award ceremony. Awards include: MEd to Roisin Skeffington, a teacher at St Peter’s primary school, Belfast; MSc to Dr Nicholas Todd, head of mathematics at Banbridge Academy, northern Ireland; MEd to Carmel Gallagher, Northern Ireland Curriculum Council; MEd to Doreen Fraser, vice principal of Fermanagh College ; and MA to Eric Boyd, head of music services, North Eastern Education and Library Board.
