James Bird, chair of governors at South Kent College and chair of SDMO Energy Ltd, has been appointed deputy lieutenant of Kent.

The University of East Anglia is awarding the following honorary degrees in July: doctor of science (ScD) to Anthony Clare, professor of psychiatry, Trinity College, Dublin, to Lord Selborne, vice-president, Foundation for Science and Technology, and to Richard Gregory, emeritus professor of neuropsychology, Bristol University, and president and honorary scientific director of the Exploratory Hands-on Science Centre, Bristol; doctor of letters to actordirectors Prunella Scales and her husband, Timothy West, and to Olive Stevenson, who recently retired as professor of social work studies at NottinghamUniversity; and doctor of civil law to Bryan Read, chair of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, and chair of governors of Town Close House School.
