The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce has awarded the Albert Medal to Sir Claus Moser, chancellor of Keele University and a trustee of the British Museum, "for distinguished merit in promoting arts, manufactures and commerce".

Stephen Jones, previously head of the international relations branch in the former Department for Education, has been appointed as chair, and Dr Rosamond Mitchell, reader in education at Southampton University, as governor to the board of the Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research. Both will serve for three years.

Tony Alderman, a regional manager for the Co-operative Society, is the new chair of Barnet College's governing body. He replaces Mary Temple, who is retiring after 24 years' service.
