Bill Goodwin, assistant chief executive for Peterborough since May 1996, has been appointed director of education for the new Peterborough City Council, which takes on all local government services next year. He has been on secondment from Cambridgeshire, where he was assistant director of education.

Raphael Wilkins, currently assistant director of education for Sutton, has been appointed director of education for Thurrock, Essex, which becomes a unitary authority in April 1988.

Angelique Gainza, a former programme area manager at Hendon College who is currently researching linguistics and education, has been appointed programme area manager of the care department at Uxbridge College. She will be responsible for courses in care, learning difficulties, English as a second languageforeign language, replacing Barbara Clarke, who retired in March.

Alan Thomson, 11, from Banton Primary School, North Lanarkshire, is the national winner of the Institution of Electrical Engineers’ “Spinning the Web” schools competition. He designed the best “home page” for the new Scottish Engineering Centre’s Internet site.
