I would like to compliment you on the opinions expressed in your leader article (TES, December 5). In Nottinghamshire our vision is to derive maximum benefit for our young people from the work-placement opportunties offered by our local employers.

We are achieving this by looking at every placement and the learning outcomes each one offers. We then match students with suitable placements which will underpin the academic or vocational courses they have chosen.

This “perfect match” scenario ensures a win, win situation for both the student for whom vocational learning is put into context and brought alive and the employer who gains a motivated student eager to learn.

I would be most grateful if you could supply me with the details of the Glasgow university research on which you based your own comments.
