Lincolnshire is a county that still tolerates selection through the 11-plus. Whatever one’s views on this, many pupils feel that they are failures when they start their secondary education.

The youngsters who came to our summer school now believe they are successful and they have all achieved targets and goals set for them over the two weeks. In most counties the pupils at summer schools will be those who have failed to achieve the national average for the key stage 2 tests.

They feel a sense of pride; they think learning is fun; they have used all kinds of new resources that we have managed to buy through the extra funding. Above all, their self-esteem has been restored and they are looking forward to the next five years.

For once I believe the Government has got it right. Lincolnshire also needs to be congratulated on funding so many literacy schools. Let’s hope that even more money may be found for next year’s summer schools.
