WE have just received our marked key stage 3 science national tests and I am perplexed.

As in the past, there are questions which are common to both papers at levels 3-6 and 5-7. If a pupil answered only these questions on both, they would achieve 84 marks. But a pupil sitting the 3-6 papers would be awarded a level 4 but on the 5-7 papers would have achieved a level 6.

Other inconsistencies include the two candidates who sat the level 5-7 papers. One scored 63 marks and was awarded a level 4, the other 59 to secure a level 5.
