The historic visit of the good ship “QE2” to Gourock last Thursday must have caused absence rates at the port’s secondary schools to soar, judging by the number of school-aged marine enthusiasts-for-the-day throng-ing the quayside.
But, as three girls, clearly of school age, looked on in a mixture of fear and delight as the jets of the RAF’s Red Arrows display team swooped through their routine in honour of the vessel’s 40th birthday, one remarked: “See this, it’s pure physics in action so it is.”
The pilots above would have been proud to know that they were playing their part in informal education beyond the classroom for these would-be physics high flyers, even if the school’s click and go computer system might have taken a different view next morning.
