(Photograph) - Highland has confirmed its commitment to small secondary schools by agreeing to a grant for the very smallest. The council’s education committee last week decided to give Pounds 14,536 a year to the parent-run Scoraig teaching group in Wester Ross. The subsidy is cheaper than accommodating, transporting and educating the five pupils from the area who currently attend Gairloch High, 30 miles from their homes, at a cost of Pounds 6,800 each.
Scoraig, which has no main road or mains electricity, can only be reached by a one-mile sea crossing. Scoraig parents, who claim they are qualified to teach 10 Standard grade subjects, are to advertise for a headteacher.
