Attracting more girls to PE will be the role of a specialist “wellbeing mentor” hired by a group of Norfolk schools. The lottery-funded post, based at Rosemary Musker high school, Thetford, is the first of its kind in Britain.
Jenny Day, project co-ordinator, said: “The mentor will work for a year with girls aged 14 to 16 in five schools. We want to find out why some are not interested in PE. Our concern is also that a loss of interest in sport can lead them to lose interest in school and learning.”
Figures show that four in 10 girls have dropped out of sports activity by the age of 18.
