Delegates at last week’s annual conference of the Association for Scottish Literary Studies have each been given a free copy of a new book, Scottish Plays for Schools, published by Hodder Gibson in association with the ASLS. The book arose from complaints by the ASLS education and language committees, that there was a lack of Scottish plays appropriate for use in secondary schools.

The Scottish Arts Council offered funding to assist the search for suitable material, and a subsequent partnership with the educational publishers has resulted in a collection of six plays by contemporary Scottish writers: Hieroglyphics, by Anne Donovan; Between the Lines, by Alison Clark; In Love, by Iain Mills; Silver Bullet, by Janet Paisley; Bairns ‘n’ Feels, by Charles Barron; and The Snob Cross Incident, by Moira Burgess.

The plays are appropriate for a wide age-range of students, although many will be appropriate for use with Intermediate or Standard grade classes.
