A plug’s a plug

The Education Minister’s second educational outing last Friday at the equal opportunities conference in Glasgow (page three) saw him put every foot right - but not New Right - as he assured his largely teacher audience that he came bearing only gifts, at least of support if not money.

Wilson departed just occasionally from his prepared text which must be a nuisance for one whose platform oratory can be a tour de force. But it was a skilfully woven text, so much so that we came away firmly of the impression that every single Labour policy from the encouragement of Scots literature in the curriculum to the year’s delay for Higher Still is intended to promote equal opportunities.

The minister left an indelible impression on at least one listener. As his comforting message ended, one member of the audience was heard to say: “Clearly a firebrand.”
