Pluses and minuses

Coursework will be replaced by extra exam questions in data handling and applied maths, as part of a new GCSE launched by exam boards from September.

The move comes after surveys for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority found most maths teachers were opposed to coursework in its current form. The decision to scrap coursework was announced last autumn and exam boards faced a race to devise new specifications in time for next September.

The changes appear to be fairly minor, with a small number of additional exam paper questions which cover the topics formerly dealt with by coursework.
