British sailing legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is to open the country’s first marine academy.

The first man to sail non-stop around the globe single-handedly will launch the reborn Tamarside Community College in September.

Marine Academy Plymouth will specialise in maths and science, with teachers making use of the natural environment around the coastal city. The academy is sponsored by Cornwall College, Plymouth City Council and the University of Plymouth.

Staff are still waiting to hear whether they will get new premises via the Building Schools for the Future scheme, which has been put on hold by the new Government.

Helen Mathieson, principal designate for the new academy, said: “The new status is about offering innovative choices and aspirational learning to its students and the wider community.”

Sir Robin has been involved in helping children not in education, employment or training. KM.
