* Has anyone at the Department for Education and Skills calculated how many thousands of hours of teachers’ time have been expended over the seasonal break completing the TES Christmas crossword? And what magnificent prize have these clever people been competing for? A single pen worth pound;10.

Perhaps next year Charles Clarke should give every teacher in the land such a pen as a present and then require them to devote the time they would have spent on the crossword to doing lesson preparation or planning.
