* Regarding the BBC documentary Nurseries Undercover (“Notice period to be cut for nursery inspections”, TES, August 20), what really needs investigating is the quality, experience and background of the Ofsted inspectors who inspect private day care. How suitable are they for this task?

They are not, as may be expected, the inspectors who visit state primary schools and nursery schools and classes.

Surely the quality of provision, which is not always apparent to parents when they visit prior to their child being admitted, needs careful assessment. That is directly related to the quality of the inspectorate.

Shortening the notice period will not deal with the problem.
