* John Dunford (Letters, TES, February 4) accuses me of “misrepresenting” the Secondary Heads Association position on market competition between schools. However, my brief quote from Dr Dunford in my article “Are you ready to compete?” (TES, January 21) was accurate.

It is clear schools are going to be held accountable to society. The practical question, today, is whether this will be mainly via elected local authorities, or whether schools must face the tougher accountability of the marketplace. A glance at the NHS shows that this Government is serious about encouraging local competition in public services. I presume that SHA is preparing its members accordingly.
