* The deconstruction of the English primary curriculum and its reconstruction as the inner circle of English and maths is the story of primary schools under Blair’s Government. Non-core subjects are given less and less weight in teacher training.

In the longer term a curriculum policy will be needed beyond narrow interpretations of literacy and numeracy. Unless children are taught a clear sense of history from primary years, they will be prey to the forces converting history into propaganda. History is vital in any real curricular vision.
