So Ruth Kelly re-affirms the Government’s intention to create a genuinely comprehensive education system for all (“Kelly’s vision for comprehensives”, TES, April 1). Splendid - no doubt there is a similar commitment to motherhood and apple pie.
But we need action now. Ministers should sit down with local authorities where children still take the 11-plus and work out a programme for reform.
It would be good to start with Kent. Far too many 11-year-olds are denied equality of opportunity in that county and enter secondary schools tagged as failures.
