Outgoing headteachers’ leader, David Hart, apparently thinks that giving parents more power in running schools is like putting alcoholics in charge of a bar.

But someone has got to stand up for our children. I am afraid that teachers for the most part, have co-operated with successive governments in the abomination of Sats and league tables and let young people down badly.

Parents, I hope, have a better grip on what is in their children’s interests. What is urgently needed is ongoing and constructive dialogue between parents, teachers and students. Let’s hope that the new government will encourage this.
