* After many years of involvement in state education, I believe vital life skills have been lost to the demands of the curriculum.

Character-training, teamwork and the teaching of life skills have gone out of the window. The post-1980 education system has left us with a generation of “home-makers” who do not know how to benefit from a well-balanced diet.

There is a dangerous dearth of electricians, plumbers, heating engineers and craftsmen. Unless something is done, the situation will snowball.

Life skills must be be brought back immediately as a central core to the school curriculum.
