YOUR article on the critical thinking examination at King Henry VIII school Coventry (TES, August 9) illustrates how difficult it is to dig into the world of education and unearth “golden rules”. Highly dependent on a complex and poorly recorded social history, academia holds few operational principles to guide reflective practitioners.

Even if Mr Fisher scores a D in the exam we could still wholeheartedly agree that “schools are about learning” and regard the AS exam as a tough one. In fact a lower grade might actually strengthen his argument!
