IS Dr Manuel Eisner missing the point when he claims that bullies have high self-esteem (TES, December 13)? I’ve always thought that self-esteem is about valuing yourself as a person. What bullies get is a sense of power over others, which is a substitute for a sense of personal worth. It doesn’t build self-esteem. It simply masks its absence.
I don’t think I have ever met a youngster with real self-esteem and self-confidence who was a bully. They don’t need to be.
