* I WRITE in response to Marie Stubbs’s book Ahead of the Class and the glowing media coverage it has received (“The lady and the comp”, TES, April 11). As a teacher who began at St George’s before Lady Stubbs’s time, I would highlight the hard work, professionalism and commitment to the school and pupils I observed and yet which seems to go unrecognised.

The fact that the school survived the murder of Philip Lawrence and improved is the achievement of many staff over years and is not just down to one person over a short period.

Would publishers be as interested in the views of a teacher without a title?
