ADRIAN Mourby does not mention that the hero of Decline and Fall, Paul Pennyfeather, (TES, May17) is present at what has to be the world’s funniest school sports day. I have read it to my class at the end of every academic year. No one who has taught (or been a pupil) could fail to enjoy Waugh’s account of this ghastly event.
