ALMOST half of inner-city children under three are anaemic as a result of a lack of iron in their diets, according to the National Diet and Nutrition survey.

Nationally 12 per cent of young children suffer from anaemia and signs of scurvy, caused by vitaminC deficiency, have also been detected. Experts blame convenience foods and the fact that many babies are not weaned onto solids at the right age, four to six months.

Reports compiled by Jon Slater, with the help of the National Children’s Bureau.
