A scheme to encourage schools to make music videos is set to be a big hit this summer. The BOOM! Music Video Academy, launched by music channel MTV and software supplier Adobe, invites students to use ICT to make a pop promo for top artists such as Jamelia (right) and Athlete, and to compete to have their work aired on MTV.

Supported by the Department for Education and Skills, BOOM! will use pop culture as a catalyst for creativity and provide links to the national curriculum in ICT, music, art and design and drama. This month, in a series of seminars around the country, teachers will be shown how to coach pupils in music video production with the help of a resource pack which includes six lesson plans aimed at key stages 3 and 4.

The BOOM! Music Video Awards invite students to employ the Adobe School Collection, which includes photo- and video-editing software, to create a video to accompany one of four tracks selected for the scheme by Parlophone Records. Teachers are supplied with the music and a collection of film clips and video loops on CD.

Launching BOOM! last month, school standards minister David Milliband said:

“This is a great project with the potential to make a big difference. You cannot have high standards unless you are committed to creativity, not only in subjects such as the arts, but creativity in your whole approach to teaching and learning.”

During the summer holidays, wannabe winners can tune into TV for tips and inspiration. MTV will be screening its BOOM! Making the Video series, which reveals the secrets behind famous artists’ videos, with daily programmes scheduled from 8am to 9am.

Open to all students under 16, the competition ends on November 1. Contact Activate UK: Tel 020 7702 5570; www.boomacademy.co.uk
