GIVEN the success of the British Educational Communications and Technology Association’s multimedia portables for teachers project and the requirement that student teachers meet further standards in ICT perhaps initial teacher-training students should also be given an Internet-ready, portable computer.
A specific grant, a low-interest loan or a leasing system could be viable ways of achieving this.
It seems that all the criteria for success identified by the project could be addressed with such an initiative and help to guarantee that within a few years most teachers would be ICT confident.
