‘Postcode lottery’ of punishments

The punishment of parents of children who miss large amounts of school is subject to a “postcode lottery”, education welfare officers in England have warned. There are “unjust” regional variations in the sanctions being meted out to parents because of a drastic reduction in the number of experts employed to tackle a persistent absenteeism and truancy, according to the National Association of Social Workers in Education and the Association of Education Welfare Management.
