Every key stage 1 teacher knows that seven-year-olds with a level 3 in writing are as rare as hens’ teeth while level 3 in reading, maths and science are much more evenly distributed (TES, March 2). Can we consider that we simly expect too much too soon? Often, children begin to write with some fluency during Y2 and need time to consolidate the complex skills involved.
