The chief reason why new primary teachers’ lessons are generally better than those in secondary (TES, March 2) is the time taken to master the art of teaching. On my BEd course I will have at least 32 weeks of teaching pactice: a PGCE student has 18 weeks. Of course most new secondary teachers aren’t as good in their first year of teaching: they haven’t had the opportunity to become good.
