It is interesting that both Bethan Marshall and Nigel de Gruchy lay claim to leading the boycott of key stage 3 English tests in 1993 (“Warrior borrows our laurels”, TES, May 11).

I don’t remember either of them planning the campaign or helping to mail heads of English in all secondaries in England and Wales. Neither do I remember tem maintaining the impetus of the action in the early days by disseminating the responses to English teachers. This was done by the London Association for the Teaching of English, led by John Wilks.
