* I disagree with Will Hutton (“Education is not enough to scale class barriers”, TES, May 11) that education is not the most important factor in overcoming class barriers and creating a fairer society.

The fact that most of us are now middle-class proves thateducation has enabled social mobility. If teachers in working-class areas were allowed to teach rather than fulfil the Government’s targets for social inclusion, mobility would be even greater.
