The Essex Early Reading Research Scheme (TES, January 18) is the latest in a long line of schemes claiming to be the best way to teach reading. I am sure the figures to support the claim are correct but any scheme can be effective given enough teaching time. More important is the efficiency of each scheme, which can be measured by the amount of learning time that each pupil takes to reach a specific stage. There have been no such studies.
