I read with interest your article on declining spelling standards (TES, February 1). As managing director of an educational publishers, I see truly appalling grammar, punctuation and spelling in many letters and emails I receive from teachers.

Here is an email I got today: “I am a Year 5 teacher at XXXXX School and have only been ther 3 weeks. While sorting out resources I have came across your Literacy week planning book with ideas linked to big books. But the school have not got them is there any you can help.” Is it any wonder that children’s standards are declining?
